Vonage/Magic Jack phone service?
Interested in perhaps saving money on my phone service.
I pay a combined $72 a month for AT&T mid level DSL, Home phone and unlimited long distance (Which I rarely use)
I am a very low user of my cell phone, on a 10 cent a minute plan with 1000 saved minutes. (Basically an emergency type phone)
I live in Birmingham,AL and am interested in the lowest cost option for phone & reasonably fast DSL service.
Cable is not really an option as somehow, I get basic cable for free. Tried to sign up when I moved here but they told my my house didn’t exist. I told them to call me when they figured me out. They never did and I plugged the TV in and saw I was getting basic cable for free. Now, they send me advertisements about 3 times a month.

Okay, the way I see it you have two options:
1)Downgrade to “metered rate service” on your phone and decline long distance service. This costs about $15/month (half of this is taxes 
. You will be alloted a certain number of minutes a month and you can’t make long distance calls. If you go over your allotment, it’s very expensive. I did this for ten years and never used up my minutes because, like you, I’m a low telephone user.
Long distance calling. To make long distance calls, sign up for Google Voice. Yes, Google is now offering free long distance calls to the U.S. and Canada. Free. Actually, no matter what you do, you should sign up for this service because you can do all sorts of really cool things with it. And it’s free. It works from you phone, too. You don’t have to be on a computer to use it.
Option 2) Buy an Ooma. This is what I have now. I was at Costco today and they had it for $199. This device hooks up to your internet connection, not your computer, and you just plug your phone into it. For $40, you can transfer your phone number to the device. Then cancel your phone service. However, if you only have one service with AT&T (DSL, but no phone) they will charge you $10 extra per month for your DSL. The Ooma provides unlimited calling to the U.S. Over time, even with the initial costs, this is the cheapest and easiest. I use an Ooma and I bought one for my 80 year old mother because it saves her money and she doesn’t have to do weird things like sign up for a Google Voice account or turn on her computer. She just picks up her phone and dials.
Oh, for my mother-in-law, she does option one since she doesn’t have a problem using Google Voice to make phone calls.
